Thrifty Thursday: Rubber Bands From Asparagus

Lately we’ve been trying to reuse everything and cut the amount of trash bags we’re sending to the landfill! I realized that I throw away a lot of things if they’re small and not useful at that moment. Do you do the same?

We eat a lot of asparagus at our house, which comes bundled by two very thick rubber bands (you can see in the photo). I usually cut the rubber bands open and throw them away. Then I had an ah-ha moment (as Oprah calls them) and thought, “Why am I throwing away these free rubber bands? I go to the store and buy a bag of 100 rubber bands, but I throw away 2 at a time, because there are only 2!”

Solution: One of my kitchen drawers now has a small zipper bag to hold rubber bands! Instead of cutting them off my produce, I just take them off and save them. When the bag gets full, I move the rubber bands to my desk and start again. I’ll probably never buy rubber bands again!
